Screencast 001: OmniFocus (part 1 of 3)

In this screencast, David covers the details of how to capture tasks in OmniFocus using your Mac, iOS devices, and (of course) a pencil.

The screencast is in AppleTV format and looks great on your Mac, iPad, and AppleTV. Enjoy.

Great svreencast. I’ve been waiting to learn ho you use OmniFocus bc I haven’t been able to figure out a workflow for my own practice with it.

Thank you for this, David. Very informative.

I’m looking forward to seeing the follow up screencasts.

I appreciate you taking the time to put these together for us.

    Thank you.

    Bravo, David

You obviously put a tremendous amount of work into this screencast to fit so much info into 20 minutes. As far as I am concerned, this cast is worth listening to at least 2 or 3 times. Thanks.

I’ve been using Omnifocus for a while and now. After watching this, I have a few changes I will be making in my (admittedly) elementary workflow.

Thank you so much David! Great job. Looking forward to parts 2 and 3.

Really enjoyed the screen cast. I also got a few new tips to use in my personal workflow. In the next episode, I am curious about how you organize your projects. I got a little too nest-happy when making my hierarchy, and it really bogged down the process of rapidly assigning them.

Also curious if you’ve ever tried to sync Omnifocus with Smartsheet. If I can get across that last mile, I will be completely in sync with the rest of my company.

    Thanks for the great screencast.

I have been eagerly awaiting these screencasts ,especially since your wonderful book “Mac At Work” inspired me to take a second look at Omnifocus. It is such a wonderful program. I enjoyed this first screencast and eagerly await the second installment. Keep up your work. You are greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the screencast! You solved the issue I was having with the clipper shortcut keys.

    Looking forward to “processing”.

So excited to watch this! Great addition to your expanding omnifocus presentations. Keep up the amazing work!

Fantastic David, thank you for a great screencast – this is a great companion to, Creating Flow With OmniFocus – By Kourosh Dini. You brought out in 20min a certain techniques for capture that I didn’t even, in 550 odd pages of his book. Way to go!

    Thanks Again

    Great screen cast very informative,

Minor point for the next ones could you just slow down a little bit when your showing menus and such, you rushed through parts of it at a 100 miles an hour it was very hard to keep up.

    David,

Thanks for the great screencast! I’m looking forward to improving my OF capture. Well done!

    David,

    Fantastic job !!!!!

    Instapaper shortcut amazing !!!!!!

Any idea on the why clippings are such a problem? I looked at the OmniGroup website and it looks like I will need to contact the Ninja’s. My shortcut is assigned with no conflicts and both quick entry or inbox just gives me a beep and nothing :-(

Thanks again, you and Katie are fantastic !!!!!!

Very comprehensive discussion about getting information into OmniFocus. I really like the comments about integrating tools of dictation.

    Nicely produced, too!

    David,

Like everyone said: Tremendous Screencast. Clear, concise and helpful.

One question – do you ever use audio recordings (quick snippets where you use the audio as the thing you put in the inbox) in your workflow? A slight variation of your recommendation to use Dragon, which I do, but I was wondering if you attach an audio file ever or have you heard of a workflow that includes this? (My thought, from the iPhone specifically, is to capture tasks as I’m driving, but without looking down to tap, copy, insert, etc.).

    Keep up the good work!

    Victor

Thank you, David & OmniFocus! I bought OF after listening to MPU podcast last year but still haven’t been successful at using OF properly. I’ve been desperate for some screen-casts from you. Hooray!

  17. Rod Webb

I get a lot of help from your podcasts and screencasts. I know what it takes to do such work well, so I appreciate the thought and effort you put into both the content and production.

  18. Eric Durbrow

Well done. Two slight criticisms: The Mailplaine part seemed to come out of no where and requires a bit more explanation. Second, I am still not convinced that Instatpaper is simply a tool to encourage procrastination. But I really appreciate this “advanced” tutorial. Thanks!

Thanks for the screencast David. It inspired me to go back and listen to the task Manager Smackdown MPU episode, plus watch Don’s basic screencasts on OmniFocus. I downloaded the iPhone app and the Mac app and spent the weekend immersed in learning OmniFocus.

At the end of all that, I downloaded Things and am much happier.

I think Katie nailed it in the MPU show – OmniFocus expects you to conform to its way of working, Things is much more flexible. I found myself spending so long adding contexts and projects and tags to tasks in OmniFocus that the whole thing ended up a complicated and confusing mess.

Things is much more flexible around existing workflows. The only advantage of OF is its syncing but hopefully Things will eventually get sorted later this year.

So Cultured Code have you to thank for creating another Things customer.

Instapaper is a wonderful tool to save articles for later perusal. If you subscribe to RSS feed as I do (134) is is a useful sorter. You can save articles there from your iPhone or iPod touch and read them on your computer, iPad or even Kindle.

  21. Martin

Very nice screen cast! Looking forward to additional parts of the series from David.

Hopefully screen casts become more common here @ MPU

  22. Mauricio Orozco

Great screencast, thanks for the extensive information on capturing.
I’ve looked at a few other screencasts and blogs trying to find examples of creating the elusive “today” perspective. If you could talk a little bit about how we can do our daily Omnifocus processing in the morning and then just have the Today perspective on our phones for example to do the work that would be great.

    Cheers,

    Mauricio

Rather than hiding OmniFocus, another option would be to put it in a different Space. That’s what I do with Things.

  24. Jon

Did the second screencast get delayed? I recall an announcement about it being posted this past weekend…

Thanks for the great screencast. I’ve been using OmniFocus for several months but had never gotten around to figuring out the tie-ins with Mail. I look forward to implementing these techniques.

  28. Thank you!

Dave, thanks for the excellent screen cast. Got me started w/ omnifocus, and am now reading Dini’s book.

  29. Lisa

Thanks for the screencast. I am new to Omniforce. I only have it on ipad right now. I can see the benefits of also getting it for my laptop as well after watching your video.

Fantastic screencast. Just got started with OmniFocus and this is extremely helpful.

  32. Doug

Thank you for the series of OmniFocus screencast. I am really “powering up” with better implementation of OmniFocus. Thank you for sharing your experience and wisdom.

  33. Bernard Gryspeert

I just downloaded a trial version of Omnifocus. I am interested in the integration capabilities with Omniplan: tasks assigned to me from within Omniplan should become bi-directionally available in Omnifocus. Is this already possible, are there any plans to do this?

    Bernard

  34. OmarKN

    @Bernard G.

Yes this is also something I’d like to know, one-direction is enough for me.
