I have tried most of the note taker apps out Notes Plus, Projectbook: Notes and To-Dos, Noteshelf, Notability. The one I settled on was “NoteTaker HD.” What it lacks in UI more than makes up for functionality. The export to pdf looks fantastic and the files are very small.
I use both the adonit jot pro and a stylus from Bamboo.
From there I export to my paperless document manager “DEVONThink To Go.” Has an awesome sync capability with its OSX brother. DEVONThink Pro Office is IMHO one of the best document management software suites for OSX.
I’ve tried all of these and settled on NOTES PLUS for ipad. It’s like notability but you can write faster as the auto forward pops up in the left when you get to the end of the zoom in box so you just bring the pen back to the left and keep writing. No waiting for the auto forward box. Also can convert writing to text by whole page or whatever you circle.
NOTES PLUS….google it.

Great podcast on a critical subject- note taking. But how can you talk about note taking techniques (particularly visual note taking) and not feature mindmapping? on the iPad iThought HD will change your note taking life. For me, hands down the best way to take, organize, visualize, share, sync your notes. Not to be too much of a ‘fan boy’, but the built in ‘research’ feature (the results of which are brought into the mindmap, the ‘doodle’ feature and the way you can add loads of text with the ‘notes’ feature are particularly powerful.
Joel, check out our entire previous episode on Mindmapping.
It’s interesting about note-taking … people have always asked me why I take so many notes (and highlight text) in classes and meetings when it’s highly likely I will never refer back to them. I’ve always understood that the benefit is in the actual act of WRITING and HIGHLIGHTING. For me, it helps me remember and understand the material presented.
Have heard Mike on two podcasts. Intrigued by the principle of Sketchnotes. Took the plunge and bought the book. Wish I had done sooner. I really can’t draw, but it has opened my eyes on how to take notes and augment Mindmaps. Enjoying trying the simple exercises to improve and with little effort it is getting better.
Mr Macsparky, a reason to buy Evernote and pay for the premium service? Take sketchnotes, you don’t need Moleskine Evernote book, take photo and wait for OCR to work. Excellent.
Another great podcast.

I like Notability for annotating PDFs freehand (using the wristguard and zoom feature) but for mostly freehand notes (& occasional text) I use Noteshelf. Much better zooming options than Notability. Will check out Notes Plus though. iThoughtsHD is brilliant (I sync with MyThoughts). Thanks for the great podcast guys !
Like Natalie I like Noteshelf, for the zooming, notebook structure. I really like how easy it is to use different types of paper. I have imported a number of my old paper forms- time sheets, day planner, food log, etc. and just make a notebook on the different types of info. If I want my notes converted to text I open 7notesHD Prem, which does a great job.
I am wondering if the guys using Notes Plus, know if it converts to text as well as the 7notesHD. I tried Write Pad and didn’t think it did very well. All in one would be nice. Great podcast!
Hey guys, no link for the Adonit Jot Pro, tut tut! So, here it is: http://adonit.net/jot/pro/. Fixed!
Here’s another manufacturer of similar styli to the Adonit, but which some users find superior: http://www.dagi-stylus.com/us/.
And here’s the new Adonit Touch that David was talking about (the pricey one with Bluetooth that’s coming): http://adonit.net/jot/touch/
I use Circus ponies notebook. I tested methodically notability Penilton it Evernote and used each for a long time and found that this app has all of the functions put together that these other apps all have but not together. Casks, outlining, duty, indexing, sketching, handwriting, shapes, Recording and indexing notes to recording, It thinks to my Mac via drop box so I have those notes on my Mac version of Circus ponies notebook, PDF annotation, And also a notebook like interface which Evernote and others don’t have. It also has the ability in landscape mode to view to separate pages and I tried again all of these other apps in the business world and this one just seems to have all of the functions I need. Although it does have a bit of a learning curve unlike Others that have simpler interfaces.
